Crazy to think that this cave was the first hospital available in the area during the civil war in the mid 1850’s.Ĭosmic Cavern was discovered in 1845, before the civil war cave, and was developed in 1927. From there you will get the best view of the cave. When you are done reading turn around and head up the stairs behind you to the first landing. In front of the fun building you will see a history plaque that will school you up on the civil war cave’s history. Make your way to the intersection of Spring and Main where you will see the red and white food stand on the southwest corner.

The Civil War Cave is located in Downtown Eureka Springs behind the famous funnel cake stand. Make sure you take a flash light with you so you can see how far the cave extends back in each direction. As you walk down to the spring and cave you will feel a temperature drop and see the cave that once housed several travelers looking for healing waters. The Cave opening is accessible on the street side via a set of stairs. The ES Parks do a great job landscaping the springs around town and the Grotto Spring is probably the most talked about of all. You can follow Spring Street up from downtown, winding through the residential streets until you see the cave opening on your left before the Eureka Springs Parks Office. It is located on upper Spring Street just below the famous Crescent Hotel. Grotto Cave and Spring is a famous landmark in downtown Eureka Springs.

In summer beat the heat, in fall avoid the rain and chill. You can explore them, tour them, eat in them and even sleep in them! My 35 year old sister was even out of breath! This is a must see attraction on the list for Eureka Springs if you have decent physical health.Did you know the Eureka Springs region has Caves of all kinds? Climbing the path back to the parking area was a physical challege in which I had to stop and catch my breath as it is very steep.

As a nurse, I would not recommend this cave for someone with a disability or in poor physical health as the path to the cave is steep with some steps and one cannot access the cave without going down a series of stone steps which were a challenge for this 41 year old in decent health.

tiny! I was very thrilled with the experience. I wasn't scared of them at all and actually thought they were cute. The bats were so small many people would have mistaken them for moths. I was lucky to get to see a cave salamander which I understand is a rare sight on cave tours and some of the tiny little bats that dwell in the cave. Not once did I loose my footing eventhough the surfaces were wet. The cave sturctures are coated in water and you can hear it dripping and running on the way out with the headphones off which was interesting.

The tour path is completly enclosed with chain link fence and railing. The tour lasted 30 minutes and you come out the same way you went in. The formation in the cave were awesome, but over time there has been some damage to some of the more delicate structures. I'm a bit claustrophobic, but was in such awe of this first time, new expereince that I didn't once feel panic or even a bit concerned I was underground! The tour is a self-guided radio tour and was very educational. Onyx Cave is one of the oldest in Arkansas and was the first cave I've ever been in so with nothing to compare my experience with, I was trilled.
